Surprise Logs

Am I the only one who does not think that title is an appetizing one? It’s from the 1957 Better Homes and Gardens Meals in Minutes, under the “Broiler Roundup” section. The caption is “Inside each, a row of olives. Next time, the surprise can be a dill pickle stick.”

Um, next time the cook will be surprised when no one comes…

Surprise Logs

1 pound ground beef

1/4 cup packaged corn-flake crumbs, or finely crushed corn flakes

1/4 cup sour cream

2 tablespoons chili sauce

2 tablespoons chopped ripe olives

2 tablespoons chopped onion

1 tablespoon snipped parsley

1/2 teaspoon salt

Dash pepper

20 pitted ripe olives

8 coney buns, toasted

Combine first 9 ingredients; shape in 5 logs to fit coney buns. Press a row of olives into center of each log, molding meat around olives. (even sounds weird) Broil 3 inches from heat, turning occasionally, 12 to 15 minutes or till done. Serve in coney buns. Makes 5 servings.

Wow…. I’m with you there! I’m a little suspicious of any recipe that uses the word “surprise”!

    Thanks for sharing this!
