Nancy Drew Cookbook: Bess’s Secret Chocolate Waffles

Here’s another great recipe from The Nancy Drew Cookbook. I’m just not sure what the “Secret” is in these.

2 squares unsweetened chocolate

1 stick (4 oz.) butter

1 scant cup sugar

2 eggs

1/2 tsp. salt

1 1/2 cups flour

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. almond extract

1 tsp. vanilla flavoring

Let the butter stand at room temperature until it is soft. Mix the butter and sugar together. Melt and cool the chocolate and and mix it with the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, salt, flour, cinnamon, almond extract, and vanilla flavoring to the chocolate mixture. Stir until well blended. Heat the waffle iron. Spoon in the batter and heat until waffles are brown. Makes 4-6 waffles.

Nancy suggests: Put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of each waffle. Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg over it.
